Villeneuve-de-la-Raho Lake: a natural haven at the gates of Perpignan
HC
The Catalan Eden: The New Provence of the Pyrénées-Orientales
Located just 6 km south of Perpignan, Lake Villeneuve-de-la-Raho has become one of the most popular outdoor sites in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Created as part of an irrigation project in the 1980s, it quickly established itself as a must-visit leisure destination, offering an exceptional natural setting between plains, vineyards, and panoramic views of Canigó and the Albères.
An Artificial Lake in the Heart of Roussillon
Created to support local agriculture and secure water supply, Lake Raho is an artificial body of water covering nearly 2.3 km², mainly fed by a canal diverted from the Têt River. Its management allows for the storage of up to 22 million m³ of water, ensuring a strategic reserve in case of drought and serving as a resource for firefighting.
A Leisure Area for Everyone
The site consists of three distinct reservoirs:
- The tourist reservoir, with a supervised beach in summer, water sports center, restaurants, and equipment rental (pedal boats, kayaks, paddleboards).
- The large reservoir, ideal for fishing (carp, pike, trout), jogging, or hiking (a 6.5 km loop around the lake).
- The 14-hectare ecological reserve, protected and closed to fishing and tourist activities, where you can observe a rich variety of migratory birds and many turtles.
There is no shortage of activities: swimming, walking or cycling, fitness trails, outdoor gym, pétanque, picnicking, rowing, windsurfing, paddleboarding… The site also hosts many sporting and festive events throughout the year (triathlons, fishing competitions, Saint John’s bonfires, Nature Festival).
